How and Why is China’s Gen Z Socializing? Soul App Survey Unravels the Truth

The year 2023 ushered in a transformative era in which China’s Gen Z navigated the complexities of an ever-evolving social landscape and unprecedented professional challenges. In this dynamic scenario, Soul App, a social platform well-liked by Chinese Zoomers got its research arm, Just So Soul, to conduct an in-depth social life survey.

Because the survey received responses mostly from the Gen Z users of the app, it offered profound insights into the nuanced trends shaping the socialization behaviors of Zoomers. It also illuminated the crucial role social networks play in providing solace and understanding to younger individuals.

Without a doubt, in the contemporary landscape, socialization has transcended its conventional boundaries. As it stands today, socialization is not just about forging personal and professional connections; it has evolved into a vital emotional outlet for individuals facing life’s challenges.

Friends now play a more pivotal role than they did in the lives of older generations as was evidenced in the fact that 34.9% of the Soul App survey participants said that they actively shared their concerns with close friends. Moreover, 28.4% of respondents revealed that they express their anxiety during networking engagements, indicating a willingness to engage with others even in more formal settings.

This shift away from traditional offline networking signifies a broader societal trend where the digital realm becomes the primary arena for social interactions. Additionally, 23.5% of the participants said that they preferred communicating their thoughts and emotions with peers who have undergone similar experiences, emphasizing the importance of shared understanding and empathy within their social circles.

However, a striking fact that emerged despite these figures was that youngsters are not keen on letting friendships, be they offline or online, dominate their lives or even their social space and personal time. In fact, young individuals showed a conspicuous preference for zero-pressure social connections.

Hence, they opt for a light-hearted approach to socializing and place significant emphasis on personal boundaries. For Gen Z, friendship is a dynamic process, much like assembling and reassembling LEGO bricks, with exceptional importance placed on flexibility and autonomy in social connections. Striking a balance between frequent contact with friends and ample alone time is a crucial aspect of this process.

Another surprising trend deciphered through the results of the Soul App survey was that young people are astonishingly at ease with human-computer interactions. Of course, previous generations did not have access to such advanced technological breakthroughs like artificial intelligence, so there are no data points to compare this trend with. But, it is amazing how easily and willingly youngsters have broken free of traditional human connections and just how comfortable they are with including virtual humans and idols in their social circle.

What stands in stark contrast to this acceptance of technology is the desire that youngsters have for creating and making local connections. Gen Zers in China are reclaiming the “nearby” in the midst of growing social atomization. These youngsters are making palpable efforts to rebuild their relationships with the nearby.

Be it in physical spaces like street markets or in digital realms, the “nearby” serves as a means to gain control over life for young people. It offers breathing room amid the hustle and bustle, and also an anchor point in what seems to be a constant state of flux. This trend signifies a broader movement towards reconnecting with the immediate environment, fostering a sense of being grounded in what is known.

Despite the need for one-to-one connections, youngsters are accepting of the limitations of their fast–paced lifestyle. So, they are certainly not relying on just offline friendships for socialization. In fact, only around 1 in 4 participants of the Soul App survey said that they get opportunities to strike new friendships annually. Also, 15% stated that they haven’t made new friends in quite a while. A heartening fact was that more than one-half of all respondents stated that they do use digital socialization as a means to forge new connections.

Furthermore, the survey also revealed that while socialization and seeking the company of like-minded individuals is important for youngsters, they have a strong independent streak which predisposes them to low-dose narcissism. So, it came as no surprise when many of the respondents said that they deem narcissism to a certain extent to be a positive trait. Their behavior seemed to echo Oscar Wilde’s words that self-love is a form of lifelong romance.

Youngsters are certainly not waiting for someone else to take care of themselves. Be it taking care of their health or treating themselves well, Gen Z is certainly not shying away from reserving some TLC (tender loving care) for themselves. And a part of this approach is seeking positive social connections as well as steadily heading towards the discovery and establishment of their life coordinates, those that will help them to successfully navigate the path of life that they choose for themselves.

In a nutshell, the Soul App survey revealed that youngsters are driven by a profound desire for belonging and self-discovery. They are redefining the significance of offline networking, embracing imaginative practices in socialization, and actively shaping their social narratives.

As they prioritize personal boundaries and rebuild connections with the nearby, the socialization journey of Gen Z is essentially a dynamic exploration of self in a rapidly changing world. This journey fosters a deeper understanding of their identity, and a profound sense of belonging, and establishes meaningful connections with the people and environment around them.
